Specialist Roofing Newcastle

Some roofs need more planning than a standard job. An older terrace or cottage where matching the original materials matters, a steep pitch where access and safety shape everything, or a shop or small commercial building where work has to fit around trading. We take on these jobs across Newcastle and the Hunter, plan them carefully, and are upfront about what they involve and where other advice is needed.

Heritage roofs

Newcastle's older inner suburbs, and towns across the Hunter such as Maitland, have many Victorian and Federation homes with terracotta tiles, slate or corrugated iron roofs, decorative ridge capping, finials and chimneys. On these roofs, the details are part of the house's character. When we repair or replace a heritage style roof, we aim to match the original materials and details as closely as we can: the tile profile and colour, the pattern of the corrugated iron, the ridge and gable details. Sometimes that means sourcing salvaged tiles to blend with the originals, or choosing a new product that is closest in appearance.

  • Terracotta tile repairs using matching or salvaged tiles where they can be sourced
  • Corrugated metal roofs replaced in a profile that suits the era of the house
  • Ridge capping, finials and gable details retained or matched where practical
  • Chimney flashings renewed without changing the look of the chimney

Working with heritage requirements

Heritage controls in NSW are set by councils and apply to particular properties and areas, not to every older home. If your property is affected, the council may have views on the materials, colours and details used, and some work may need approval before it starts. If you receive conditions or advice from council or a heritage adviser, we work to it. If a matching material is not available, we tell you so you can discuss alternatives with council before anything is ordered, not after it is on the roof.

  • You confirm the property's status and any consent needed with your council
  • We provide material details and samples you can take to council where useful
  • Any approval conditions become part of our written scope
  • We raise sourcing problems early, before materials are ordered

Steep roofs

Steep roofs are common on older homes, Federation style houses, and some architecturally designed homes and extensions. The roofing itself is similar, but everything about access changes. Walking a steep roof safely requires fall protection, and depending on the pitch, height and site, that can mean roof anchors and harnesses, edge protection or scaffolding. Materials have to be lifted and stored safely on the roof, and work often takes longer because every movement is planned. We work out the access method at the inspection and include it in the quote, so there is no surprise charge once the job starts.

  • Access planned at inspection: harness systems, edge protection or scaffolding as the roof requires
  • Tile and metal repairs, restoration and replacement on steep pitches
  • Material handling planned so nothing is stacked unsafely on the roof
  • Honest timing: steep roofs take longer, and weather has more influence on work days

Light commercial roof work

Shops, offices, medical rooms, small warehouses and mixed use buildings often have metal roofs with low pitches, long sheet runs, box gutters and many penetrations for air conditioning and exhaust fans. Those features bring their own problems: water sitting on low pitches, box gutters that overflow into the building, and flashings around plant that loosen over time. We carry out repairs, flashing work, box gutter repairs and replacement, and roof sheeting on light commercial buildings. We plan work around trading and building access, and follow any site rules the building has.

  • Leak tracing on low pitch metal roofs
  • Box gutter repairs and replacement, and overflow checks
  • Flashings around air conditioning units, exhaust fans and other penetrations
  • Roof sheet replacement, including Colorbond and Lysaght profiles
  • Scheduling around trading hours and tenant access

Straight about price

What does it cost?

We have no sourced guide price for specialist roof work, and these jobs vary too much for a typical figure to be useful. The main drivers are access (scaffolding and edge protection can be a significant part of a steep roof job), the availability and cost of matching or salvaged materials for heritage roofs, roof size and complexity, any conditions attached to council consent, and for commercial buildings, after hours or staged work to suit trading. Your exact price is confirmed in writing after a free on-site inspection.

Questions before you enquire

Specialist Roofing questions

Straight answers to what homeowners ask us most about specialist roofing.

Do I need council approval to work on a heritage roof?

It depends on the property and the work. Check with your council whether your home is heritage listed or in a heritage conservation area and whether consent is needed. We do not give planning advice, but we will work to any conditions you receive.

Can you match old terracotta tiles?

Often, using salvaged tiles or the closest current product. Some older profiles are hard to find, so we tell you at the inspection what is realistic before anything is ordered.

Can you replace a corrugated iron roof on an old house?

Yes. We replace old corrugated roofs with new metal roofing in a profile that suits the house. If the property is heritage affected, confirm any requirements with council first.

Why does work on a steep roof cost more?

Steep roofs need more access equipment, such as harness anchors, edge protection or scaffolding, and work takes longer because movement and material handling must be planned carefully. Those costs are set out in the written quote.

How steep is too steep to work on?

Very few roofs cannot be worked on; the pitch changes the access method rather than ruling the job out. We decide the right setup at the inspection.

What light commercial roof work do you do?

Leak repairs, flashings around plant and penetrations, box gutter repairs and replacement, and roof sheet replacement on shops, offices and small industrial units.

Can you work around my business hours?

We plan commercial work around trading and building access, and follow any site rules. Tell us your constraints at the inspection so they are part of the plan.

Are you heritage roofing specialists?

We are a roofing business that takes care with older homes: matching materials and details and working to any council conditions. We do not provide heritage consultancy or planning advice.
